March is Pet Poison Awareness Month. We\u2019d like to take this opportunity to remind you of the trouble your pets could get into with the right combination of curiosity, boredom, and easy access to potential toxins in and around your home.<\/p>\n<p>Pet poisoning prevention isn\u2019t complicated, but it does take an understanding of what constitutes a danger to your pet, and what you can do to avert a tragedy.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Common Pet Poisons<\/h3>\n<p>Many items commonly found in our homes, garages, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.truecareveterinaryhospital.com\/blog\/heat-safety-for-pets\/\">backyards can pose a serious health risk<\/a> to our four-legged family members. Some of the most common culprits for pet poisoning include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.truecareveterinaryhospital.com\/blog\/hidden-holiday-food-dangers-pets\/\">People food<\/a>, including chocolate, alcohol, anything containing the artificial sweetener Xylitol, grapes\/raisins, macadamia nuts, onions, coffee grounds, and fatty meats<\/li>\n<li>Garbage, food scraps, and compost<\/li>\n<li>Human and pet medications<\/li>\n<li>Household cleaners and other chemicals<\/li>\n<li>Personal care products<\/li>\n<li>House and landscaping plants<\/li>\n<li>Pesticides, rodenticides, and insecticides<\/li>\n<li>Antifreeze and other automotive fluids<\/li>\n<li>Bone meal, blood meal, and other soil amenders<\/li>\n<li>Cocoa hull mulch<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Pet Poisoning Prevention<\/h3>\n<p>Pet owners are aware of their pet\u2019s propensity to sniff, lick, and chew on a wide variety of objects. Some pets seem almost indifferent to what they put in their mouths! Regardless of your pet\u2019s past behavior, however, it\u2019s important to realize that an accidental pet poisoning can happen anytime, anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Our pet poisoning prevention tips are easy to implement in and around your home:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take a good look around your home and garage and remove or securely store any potential pet toxins.<\/li>\n<li>Clean up antifreeze spills immediately, and store unused portions in a tightly sealed container out of your pet\u2019s reach.<\/li>\n<li>Always supervise your pet while outdoors, and don\u2019t allow them to investigate alleys, puddles, or garbage.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t feed table scraps to your pet.<\/li>\n<li>Remove and store leftover food promptly, and keep garbage bins covered to prevent curious pets from investigating.<\/li>\n<li>Make it a household rule that all backpacks, purses, and coats must be hung up out of pets\u2019 reach, as these items often contain leftover food, medications, and other potential pet hazards.<\/li>\n<li>Before bringing any plants into your home, or planting any outdoors, check out the ASPCA\u2019s comprehensive list of toxic plants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you know or suspect your pet has ingested something they shouldn\u2019t have, time is of the essence.
